On February 12, 2014, Machado joined the leader of Voluntad Popular, Leopoldo López, in a violent plan called La Salida which saw 43 citizens and members of the security forces murdered throughout the country. In many cases, citizens and security forces were shot in the face for trying to remove barricades set up by the far-right organizers of the so-called Guarimbas.

In March 2014, Machado, who was still an AN deputy, intended to speak before the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States as alternate ambassador of the government of Panama, an action that ultimately did not proceed.

The Venezuelan government asserted that by accepting this investiture, Machado had automatically resigned from her position as a parliamentarian, because it violated the provisions of the Constitution.

The then president of the National Assembly, Deputy Diosdado Cabello, explained that the action violated Article 191 of the Constitution, which establishes that parliamentarians “will not be able to hold public office for foreign governments without losing their investiture” except under specific exemptions for which Machado did not qualify.

Sanctions
With the arrival of the opposition majority in parliament in 2015 and the activation of Guaidó’s fake “interim government” in 2019, Machado became a fake “ambassador” and requested that the United States and its allies apply unilateral coercive measures to Venezuela. These “sanctions” cost Venezuela approximately US $642 billion between 2015 and 2022, as recently estimated by President Nicolas Maduro

In addition, she repeatedly requested the activation of the Inter-American Treaty of Reciprocal Assistance (TIAR), disguised as a “peace force,” which aimed to overthrow the president through violent means. Furthermore, Machado pushed for the use of the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) imperialist doctrine as an alternative method to overthrow the government through foreign military intervention.

• Machado requested sanctions that prevented the purchase of medications for 60,000 HIV patients.
• She accepted the position of diplomatic representative of Panama before the Organization of American States.

Venezuela’s foreign minister denounces fascist agenda of opposition leader María Corina Machado April 8, 2024 

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil denounced this Sunday that one of the representatives of the violent right wing, María Corina Machado, sustains a fascist agenda to destabilize that nation and hinder its electoral process, an intention that has the full support of the United States Government. 

Through the social network X, the diplomat expressed that “Hasta el final” — Until the end — a phrase used by the leader of the organization Vente Venezuela, reveals a fascist plan, backed by the White House, “to suffocate the Venezuelan people through perverse blockades and sanctions.” 

Gil revealed an audio with Machado’s statements, which shows “the genocidal fantasy of this lady to satisfy her lust for power and to be the new puppet of her Yankee masters”. Questioned about the way in which other nations can commit interference and “collaborate” with the change of the revolutionary and popular government of Venezuela, she said that “yes they can collaborate by increasing the pressure until they provoke the breakdown and the departure of (constitutional president Nicolas) Maduro”.

The Venezuelan foreign minister detailed that “more sanctions” are needed, since in his opinion “they are working”. The audio also shows how he demands that they be increased and lead to “total financial asphyxiation”, regardless of how they may affect the welfare of the people.

The demand for more economic pressure measures, which in the case of Venezuela have been applied together with military, political and media aggression, constitute a repeated pattern in the discourse of Machado, who insists on imposing her candidacy for the July 28 presidential elections even though she was disqualified from holding public office for a period of 15 years for corruption and violence.

The first contract between USAID and DAI for its Venezuela operations authorized $10 million for a two year period. DAI opened its doors in the Wall Street of Caracas, El Rosal, in August 2002, and began to immediately fund the same groups that just months earlier had executed – unsuccessfully – the coup against President Chávez.

The USAID/DAI funds in Venezuela were distributed to organizations such as Fedecámaras and the Confederación de Trabajadores Venezolanos (CTV), two of the principal entities that had led the coup in April 2002 and that later headed another attempt to oust Chávez by imposing an economic sabotage and oil industry strike that crippled the nation’s economy.

One contract between DAI and these organizations, dated December 2002, awarded more than $10,000 to help design radio and television propaganda against President Chávez. During that time period, Venezuela experienced one of the most viscious media wars in history. Private television and radio stations, together with print media, devoted non-stop programming to opposition propaganda for 64 days, 24 hours a day.

In February 2003, DAI began to fund a recently created group named Súmate, led by Maria Corina Machado, one of the signators of the “Carmona Decree”, the famous dictatorial decree that dissolved all of Venezuela’s democratic institutions during the brief April 2002 coup d’etat. Súmate soon became the principal opposition organization directing campaigns against President Chávez, including the August 2004 recall referendum. The three main agencies from Washington operating in Venezuela at that time, USAID, DAI and the National Endowment for Democracy (“NED”), invested more than $9 million in the opposition campaign to oust Chávez via recall referendum, without success. Chávez won with a 60-40 landslide victory.

Since the end of the Obama administration and throughout Donald Trump’s presidential term, Rubio was one of the main proponents of the encirclement and siege of Venezuela, using his position as a US senator sponsored by corporate contributors from fossil fuels and mining sectors. His anti-Venezuela activities have continued throughout the Biden administration. Although he has mostly been focusing on Venezuela, he has also pursued similar agendas to destabilize Venezuela’s allies such as Cuba and Bolivia.

Marco Rubio is not only accused of political interference abroad by Venezuela, Cuba and Bolivia. There have been equally scandalous and controversial accusations against him for influence peddling and criminal favors linked to drug trafficking.

María Corina Machado’s connections with the Republican Party date back almost two decades, when, in 2002, she was received in Washington DC by the then president of the United States, George W. Bush, with whom she had a meeting at the White House.

The Republican link has become more explicit since the United States launched the political strategy of economic and financial aggression against Venezuela through illegal sanctions, which was followed by an international campaign that tried to present the situation in Venezuela as a «humanitarian emergency» to justify different mechanisms of foreign interference.

María Corina Machado acted as the ideological and political vanguard of the initiatives that Republican Senator Marco Rubio and associated personalities were carrying out, such as the sanctions and other «humanitarian intervention» agendas.

The global energy crisis, caused by the coercive «sanctions» imposed by the United States against Russia, has influenced the concessions made by the White House. However, the White House has to manage the reactions to these concessions made by the anti-Venezuela lobby in Florida, involving «Venezuelan diaspora,» which is pushing for the continuation of the blockade against Venezuela and has rejected diplomatic rapprochement between the Biden administration and the government of President Maduro.

María Corina Machado is in complete harmony with these groups. In response to the imminent death of the «maximum pressure» strategy, she has raised her voice to ask the US government to reinforce the blockade against Venezuela and has repudiated the partial agreement signed by the representatives of the government and the Unitary Platform at the Mexico talks.

With such precedents, it is impossible to associate the image of María Corina Machado with that of a supposed positive change for Venezuela, an image she intends to present by claiming the status of an «outsider,» even though historically she has positioned herself as a political figure of the opposition establishment. The actors and influences that she promotes on Venezuelan soil come from outside the borders of the country and respond to political agendas in Florida and Washington DC.
