International Space Station ISS: 10 ting du antagelig ikke visste

(Ha i mente at dette er den offisielle versjon og fra avisen The Telegraph)

1) The space station has been continuously staffed with a rotational crew since its launch in October, 2001. Since then it has been visited by astronauts from 15 different nations.

2) The station travels at a speed of 17,227mph and completes 15.7 orbits in a day.

3) The station has more room than a five-bedroom house and boasts two bathrooms, an observation deck with panoramic views of the Earth and a gymnasium.

4) In May 2009, the station was finally able to support its full six-member crew.

5) After 11 years of construction and $100 billion spent, the space station has reached 98 percent completion.

6) Russian Soyuz capsules, with a three-member capacity, serve as the emergency evacuation vehicles for the International Space Station because of their reliability and well-developed emergency escape system. There has always been a Soyuz capsule at the ISS ever since the first crew travelled in it in 2000.

7) American astronauts will have to hitch rides to the ISS on Russian Soyuz spacecraft as NASA plans to retire its three space shuttles – Discover, Atlantis and Endeavour – this year.

8) The station serves as a laboratory to conduct experiments in biology, astronomy, combustion physics and meteorology in a unique microgravity environment.

9) The US solar array on the ISS has a surface area equal to eight basketball courts.

10) Once it is complete, 52 computers will control the systems on the ISS
